Martin Hoogland started in 1973 as one of the youngest and most ambitious officers in the Amsterdam police force. After good reviews, he is allowed to go to the infamous Bureau Warmoesstraat as a 19-year-old agent. There he is exposed to corruption within the police and to the temptations of the underworld. He was forced to resign in 1984 for misconduct.

Hoogland then manages to join the top of the Yugoslav mafia in record time. He immerses himself in the nightlife and uses way too much cocaine. In 1993 he was convicted of the murder of mob boss Klaas Bruinsma and drug trafficker Tonny Hijzelendoorn. Martin Hoogland has to go to prison for twenty years. When he is allowed to go outside during his rehabilitation process in 2004, he is shot dead on the street.

Hoogland’s life story has never been described in such detail before. The author is partly based on many conversations with (former) agents, criminal colleagues and family members, including Martin Hoogland’s son. Martin H. is the dramatic story of a derailed police officer, against the background of the hardening of the soft drug trade and the rise of coke in the Netherlands.
