Jan Ullrich
The poignant life story of a defeated rider In 1997, Jan Ullrich left his mark on the cycling world by crushing his rivals in the first mountain stage of the Tour de France and he became the first ever German Tour winner that year, leaving an unforgettable impression on colleagues, fans and press. Everyone agreed: Jan Ullrich was the most talented rider of his generation and the future of the sport.
He became a national hero, was soon voted the most popular athlete of all time in Germany and was responsible for the increasing popularity of cycling in his home country. Still, after his 1997 win, Ullrich never really made it to the top. In fact, his ongoing rivalry with Lance Armstrong in the years that followed would set the stage for the most controversial period in Tour de France history.
In Jan Ullrich: the man, the myth, the truth Daniel Friebe tells Ullrich’s story. It is the poignant account of a fate marked by a troubled childhood, mental and physical frailty, unbearable expectations, a morally corrupt sport and the influence of one man: Lance Armstrong.
