New Sonos headphones seem closer than ever
At the end of last year, Sonos acquired T2 Software, a company that works on the development of new Bluetooth technologies. Now Sonos shared that they are looking for a marketing company to introduce a new product. It is probably a headset.
Silent takeover
Sonos itself kept quiet about the acquisition of T2 Software, but now confirms to Protocol that they acquired the American start-up last year. In November, T2 Software was acquired by Sonos and after the acquisition, the software company’s website was taken offline. T2 Software was founded in 2018 by Tim Reilley. Previously, Reilley worked on wearables at Qualcomm.
T2 Software was working on the implementation of Bluetooth LC3. That is an audio codec for the Bluetooth LE Audio standard. At the beginning of 2020, LE Audio was presented as a new standard for audio that works via bluetooth low energy. It also got some new features. Current bluetooth audio devices require a high bitrate to provide high sound quality. The new codec could make this possible at a much lower bitrate. This should also result in energy savings according to T2 Software. After all, LE Audio would also support broadcasting audio to multiple devices. So you could send audio from one device to multiple wireless headphones at the same time.
Patent application
Protocol suspects that Sonos plans to announce its own wireless headphones soon. There have been rumors about this since 2019. Sonos headphones were also featured in a patent application from the company in 2020, and a rumor also surfaced in 2021 about the arrival of noise-cancelling headphones.
Sonos’ marketing chief Pete Pendersen recently shared on LinkedIn that they are looking for a marketing company to launch one of their “most ambitious projects ever.” It would be a new product category for Sonos, but the category itself would already be well developed. Headphones fit that description very well. Sonos has not responded to questions about these headphones.
