New series on Netflix in May 2023

Netflix is the Vieille Garde of the streaming services available in the Netherlands. Since the start of Disney +, a lot of content has disappeared from the platform, but this is more than made up for by the huge influx of Netflix originals.

In terms of subscriptions, there are three options to choose from. Basic ($7.99 per month) provides access to a single device and has the lowest image quality. With standard (€ 11.99 per month) you get the option to share your account with 1 person and it is possible to stream content in HD. Premium (€15.99 per month) provides access to 4 devices with streaming in ultra HD quality. In this article, we take a look at three new series that will be shown on Netflix in the coming month.

#1 Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story

Two seasons of Bridgerton have already passed and a third will be added on May 4. This time a prequel in which we are presented with the story of Queen Charlotte. In this series you go back in time and see how Charlotte, whose stately presence was unmissable in the previous two seasons, came to the throne. Bridgerton poses the question: what if Regency-era British court culture wasn’t racist in and out? The result is a costume drama in which the cast is no whiter than a Jan des Bouvrie interior.

How that is possible, the series almost never thought about for a moment before and, if you ask me, you don’t have to do that at all this season. That debate is indeed being conducted online. Brigerton is always shamelessly dramatic and ultimately wonderfully ‘feel-good’. If you ask me, top shelf Guilty pleasure material.

In the third season we meet new characters such as Butler Brimsley and you see the return of old acquaintances (in the flashbacks, of course, played by younger actors) such as King George and Lady Danbury. Have you always wondered who really hides behind that controlled smile and imposing presence of Queen Charlotte? Then you should not miss Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

#2 XO, Kitty

XO, Kitty is a romantic dramedy that takes place in Korea and follows the love affairs of Kitty Covey. It’s a story as old as Methuselah: girl meets boy online, girl travels across the ocean to meet him. But what turns out? He just has a girlfriend. The scoundrel! And yes, what do you do? Going back after putting in so much effort is also a bit of a shame. All the more so because you have registered at the school of the boy in question. Kitty thinks she’s pretty wise when it comes to love, but how do you fix this? If you want to know how this all unfolds, the first season of the series can be seen on Netflix on May 18.

#3 FUBAR

Arnold Schwarzenegger, a worn-out actor who refuses to retire despite questionable acting talents, plays Luke, a worn-out CIA agent who refuses to retire despite questionable espionage skills. What Arnold does is hardly acting, but you don’t have to! Arnold is already top entertainment in his own right. Yet this time he steps out of his comfort zone with one toe by playing a leading role in a series for the first time. Besides the usual fistfights and chase scenes, it’s up to Luke to save the relationship with his daughter. That requires the necessary effort, because guess what? Luke is not the only one in the family who has been hiding his real career from the rest for years.

Monica Barbara plays daughter Emma and of course they have “More issues than Sports Illustrated”. Still, they have some surprisingly fun on-screen chemistry. Whether FUBAR (F-ed Up Beyond All Recognition, a favorite expression of many American WWII soldiers for when everything didn’t go as planned) is just the title of the series or also the summary of most reviews, we will know on May 25.
