New PS5 feature coming? Players have been waiting for this feature for 2 years

When is the Discord voice chat feature coming to the PS5? That’s a question many fans have been asking for a long time. The feature has been available on Xbox for quite some time – and recent discoveries by dataminers suggest that it may soon be available on PlayStation as well.

Discord on the PS5: dataminers find evidence of voice chat integration

In May 2021, Sony dropped the bomb and announced that it would partner with Discord and also secured some shares in the company. Since then, PS5 owners have been sitting on hot coals waiting to finally be able to use Discord regularly via their console. While PlayStation players have been able to link their PSN account to their Discord account for some time, the connection offers little value other than an ad letting their friends know what PlayStation game they’re currently playing.

But that could change soon – at least that’s starting to happen new find of dataminers vicinity. They have discovered some interesting lines in the code of the popular program that explicitly deal with Discord’s voice chat function via the PS5 (source: GitHub). For example, there are some unique text prompts:

“Now you can join a call on your PS5. Grab your headset and controller!”

“We have new features for PS5 users. Hang out with Discord friends while playing games on voice chat.”

When is the PS5 Discord update coming?

There is not yet an official date for the start of the integration on the PS5. However, there is a suspicion in the rumor mill that PS5 players won’t have to wait too long for the new feature.

Discord version 7.00 will be launched on March 8, 2023 – and the current assumption is that from then on PlayStation fans will also be able to use Discord’s voice chat via their console. We will keep you up to date.
