New PlayStation 5 is slimmer: Sony’s diet plan works

In a first country, Sony released a modified PS5 without notice. In comparison, it is lighter, but some important questions about the inner workings remain unanswered.

Sony releases lighter PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 wasn’t exactly lightweight at launch. The variant with an optical drive weighed 4.5 kg, while the purely digital variant still weighed 3.9 kg. Apparently that was still too difficult for the Japanese manufacturer, because in Australia a slimmer version of the console surfaced. This is already the second revision in which the PS5 is put on a diet.

The new model, called CFI-1202A, weighs 3.9 kg including the drive. So it is 600g lighter than the original PS5. With the digital variant (CFI-1202B), the PlayStation 5 now weighs 3.4 kg, i.e. 500 g less than before (source: press start). Sony may have made adjustments to the heatsinks again to push the console’s weight down. It is still unclear whether the inner workings have changed beyond that.

So far the lighter PlayStation 5 only appeared in Australia where, as in many other markets, there has been an increase in price. In Japan, the PS5 is expected to become more expensive from mid-September, from which point the slimmer versions of the console should also be available there. The release of the new models can also be expected in other markets, possibly also from September 15th.

Sony: PlayStation 5 now costs more

In Germany and other countries, the PlayStation 5 has recently been costing at least 449.99 instead of 399.99 euros. For the version with drive, 549.99 instead of 499.99 euros are due. Sony gives unfavorable currency trends and high inflation rates as the reason for the price increase.
