New movies and series on HBO Max in May 2023

HBO may be a so-called ‘household name’ in the US, for many the channel came out of nowhere with the release of Game of Thrones all the way back in the gray past called 2011. Since then, we also know here in the Netherlands that HBO is for quality. Hopefully we won’t forget that when the three letters of the streaming platform’s name disappear and it is simply called ‘Max’.

Because HBO has been taken over by Warner Bros. Discovery, you will find more content on the platform than you might have thought at first glance. HBO Max also includes content from Warner Bros., Cartoon Network, and Adult Swim. You already have a Basic HBO Max subscription from a paltry € 5.99!

In a world dominated by names like Aretha Franklin and Gloria Gaynor, suddenly there was a woman named Donna Summer. Soul, Disco and Funk formed the battleground. The singers who competed for the spotlight were all rock and roll, but in one area no one could compete with Donna. “I approach singing like an actress, not a singer.” The quote can be heard in the trailer and captures exactly what made Summer special. Showbiz, baby! And she certainly gave a show, every time.

Donna Summer is known for songs like ‘I Feel Love’, ‘Love to Love You’ and ‘Hot Stuff’. But all that, she said herself, was an act. Which person was really hiding behind the “actress” who died in 2012? In this documentary, director Roger Ross Williams tries to answer that question. The documentary already premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February and received a warm reception there. For us unfortunates, all that remains is to wait for its release on HBO Max on May 20. Have a look at the trailer below.

Haven’t subscribed to HBO Max yet?

No, not a movie about the aftermath of Donald Trump serving cold McDonald’s to an entire team of basketball players. White House Plumbers is about the henchmen of that other Republican president with loose ideas about what is and isn’t legal. “I’m saying that when the president does it, that means that it’s not illegal.” A statement by Nixon that for many meant nothing less than an admission of guilt in the context of the Watergate scandal.

Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux play Howard Hunt and Gordon Liddy, the White House Plumbers. Their job, to put it in less savory terms, “was to make the shit go away.” In other words, to prevent the leaking of documents to the press. No resource is left unused in this struggle. They go a little too fanatical with the result, spoilers, the eventual resignation of Nixon. Anyone who knows Harrelson and Theroux knows more or less what to expect: humor of caliber. The series premiered on HBO Max on May 1. Have a look at the trailer below.

The year is 1978 and Nicolae Ceaușescu rules Romania with an iron fist. In this tense atmosphere, his right-hand man Victor Godeanu (played by Alec Secareanu) decides it’s enough; he is going to defect to the Americans. The story is probably partly based on the true story of Ion Mihai Pacepa, a Romanian two-star general who actually defected to the Americans in 1978. Then the highest-ranking Soviet that had ever taken the step.

However, Godeneanu is not only Ceaușescu’s right-hand man in Spy/Master, but also keeps an eye out for the KGB. When this threatens to become public, he takes the hare path during a diplomatic visit to Germany. However, there is a problem: his family is still in Romania. It promises to be a blood-curdling series. Spy/Master will be available to stream from May 19.
