New memory expansion costs more than the console

So far there is only a 1 TB storage expansion for the Xbox Series X | S, but that should change soon. Microsoft has now announced both a 512 GB and a 2 TB card for more space on the latest Xbox consoles. The price of these cards remains high and even exceeds that of the console itself.

Update from October 22, 2021

Since there is only 364 GB available for games on Xbox Series S, memory expansions are definitely attractive accessories. The official solution to the memory problem are the cards that Microsoft developed together with hardware manufacturer Seagate. After the 1 TB version, these cards will soon also be available with 512 GB and 2 TB storage space.

Xbox Series X | S: Storage space remains expensive

The new cards cost $ 140 (512 GB) and $ 400 (2TB). This makes the 2TB card even more expensive than the Series S itself, which costs $ 300 and is even cheaper, depending on the offer. If you want a memory expansion for the Xbox Series X | S, you can’t get past the three products at the moment. Admittedly, can Connect external hard drives via USB, however, the console cannot start games optimized for the next-gen consoles from there.

So if you don’t want to spend between 140 and 400 US dollars on one of Microsoft’s cards, you have to limit the number of games available at the same time. Or you always have to move the games from an external hard drive to the Xbox, in most cases this should be faster than a new download.

The 512 GB card should be in the middle November 2021 appear and the 2 TB variant then in December 2021 follow. (Source: Microsoft).

Xbox Series X | S: Promo material shows cheaper memory expansion

The Xbox Series X / S can easily be expanded with a 1TB Seagate card, but it is very expensive. Soon there should be a cheaper alternative.

While the Xbox Series X offers 1 TB of internal storage, of which 802 GB can be used for games and apps, the Series S only has 512 GB to offer, of which only 364 GB are available. Both consoles can be expanded with a Seagate external hard drive, but since it is a CFexpress card, it is quite expensive and costs an average of 210 euros.

The Windows Central page now reports one cheaper and new 512 GB alternative. The information comes from a retail list in France announcing a smaller storage upgrade from Seagate. The website also reports on exclusive promotional material that has been sent to them. A 512 GB alternative would undoubtedly be cheaper than the previously available 1 TB option, maybe even half as expensive.

No exact price is known yet, but according to promotional material in the USA the new card should be on the shelves for Christmas business 2021.

Rumor has it that Seagate has further plans

In addition to the 512 GB expansion card, which increases the internal memory of the consoles, Seagate is probably also preparing a USB-based SSD storage solution that allows you to save games separately from the internal storage pool.

“Although you cannot run new generation games with this USB-based extension, moving the games from the USB SSD to the internal SSD may be faster than downloading them again,” says Windows Central.
