New iPhone update improves accident detection

Around three weeks after the iOS 16.1.1 security update, Apple has released another iPhone update with iOS 16.1.2. The new software version primarily improves accident detection, but should also close other security gaps.

Apple releases iPhone update iOS 16.1.2

New iPhone update iOS 16.1.2 includes according to Apple “Critical Security Update”. In addition, the new software should improve compatibility with mobile network operators and accident detection. However, the iPhone group is keeping a low profile when it comes to the details of the content.

However, the improved compatibility with mobile network operators is probably due to problems with the iPhone 14. Because the new Apple models sometimes spit out error messages when using some eSIM cards and could not recognize them.

iOS 16.2 already in the works

Apple introduced its accident detection, also known as crash detection, along with the iPhone 14 and its new Apple Watch models. This is a function that is designed to recognize accidents based on microphone and sensor data in order to contact the emergency number in an emergency.

However, the function has so far not only recognized accidents as such. Because shortly after the release, numerous users reported false alarms in amusement parks. According to this, the accident detection recognized roller coaster rides as accidents and therefore dialed the emergency call.

Install iOS 16.1.2

With iOS 16.1.2, Apple has apparently readjusted the function. The new iPhone update is primarily a security update that also fixes some functional errors, such as with accident detection. With iOS 16.2, the next update is already in development. Then new functions should be on board again.

iOS 16.1.2 has been available for free download since November 30, 2022. Apple traditionally recommends timely installation. The new iPhone update is available for all models from iPhone 8 onwards. The version can be downloaded via the device settings under “General” and “Software update”.
