New Google Pixel Fold images leaked

Android developer Google should soon show what the operating system should look like on a foldable. In addition, the foldable top dog Samsung has competition, which is still rare outside of China. Noted leaker Evan Blass, aka Evleaks, has shared some apparently official press photos via his (private) Twitter account, which seem appealing.

Google Pixel Fold: Apparently a particularly thin foldable

Evleaks has been active as a leaker for ages and usually only provides press photos that are passed to it from unknown sources. The images of the Pixel Fold, as the expected name is, also appear to be official.

Images of the Pixel Fold suggest that the hinge, which has been dubbed “the most durable hinge on a foldable device” in the past, could close tighter than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4.

The frame around the interior display appears a bit wider than Samsung’s, but the Pixel model is apparently slimmer than the Galaxy Fold. According to Blass, the folded Pixel Fold is only 12.1 millimeters thick (139.7 by 79.5 by 12.1 millimeters). When unfolded, it is only 5.8 millimeters thick (139.7 by 158.7 by 5.8 millimeters). Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 is 15.8 millimeters at its thickest point (closed: 155.1 x 67.1 x 15.8 millimeters; open: 155.1 x 130.1 x 6.3 millimeters)

The form factor also seems to differ a bit from Samsung’s and is more reminiscent of Oppo’s Find N. The external display is said to measure 5.5 inches diagonally and be wider than that of the Z Fold 4. In addition, the inner screen unfolds with an alleged 7.6 inches to a landscape format.

Google Pixel Fold: More alleged specifications

In addition to the alleged press photos and dimensions, Blass shared a number of other equipment details via Twitter:

He doesn’t say a word about the main camera, but it shouldn’t be worse than that of a Pixel 7, after all, Google is considered one of the companies with the best cameras in smartphones. As far as the front camera is concerned, according to Blass, it should have a 9.5 megapixel sensor with dual pixels, 1.22 micron pixel size, ƒ/2.2 aperture and an angle of view of 84 degrees. According to the leaker, the inner camera comes with an eight-megapixel sensor, 1.12 micron pixels, ƒ/2.0 aperture and 84-degree angle.

He also speaks of water protection according to IPX8, i.e. as with Samsung’s Fold, and USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2. He also confirms the colors that Roland Quandt from Winfuture has already reported on: The Pixel Fold should be in obsidian (black /anthracite) and porcelain (cream/white) appear.

In view of the now high leak density, the presentation of the first foldable from Google should not be long in coming. And as luck would have it, the Google I/O developer conference will take place on May 10th, which the company has also used in the past to present new hardware.

However, the foldable will not be cheap, but moves in the regions of a Galaxy Fold: Recently there was talk of prices between 1,700 and 1,800 euros if it should be available in June. The budget smartphone Pixel 7a is also expected at Google I/O 2023.
