New generation Gorilla Glass protects smartphone cameras
Corning has introduced its next generation Gorilla Glass DX and DX+. This time Gorilla Glass DX protects not only wearables but also all kinds of phone camera lenses. It is important that the glass allows a lot of light to pass through.
Corning Gorilla Glass DX(+)
We all know Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which is the latest generation of the strong glass for smartphone screens. It protects phones from scratches and drop damage. Gorilla Glass DX, on the other hand, has been protecting the screens of wearables such as smartwatches since 2018, but from now on the technology is also ready to be used for smartphone cameras.
The new Gorilla Glass DX and Gorilla Glass DX+ should enable the protection of Gorilla Glass for camera lenses, but that came with challenges, Corning claims in a press release. The light transmittance of camera lenses plays an important factor, and the company has made sure that its glass not only protects, but also lets in more light than the glass used for smartphone cameras today.
First in a Samsung
Manufacturers currently use an anti-reflective coating for cameras, but it only lets in 95 percent of the incident light, Corning says. Gorilla Glass DX, on the other hand, can let in 98% of the light, the company insists.
Samsung will be the first manufacturer to use Gorilla Glass DX with its phones, and we may see the glass first on the camera of its foldable Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Z Flip 3. Both devices will be introduced on August 11 at a Unpacked event. After that, we expect that other brands will also start working with Gorilla Glass DX.
Corning argues that the number of photos taken worldwide has exploded in recent years. In the year 2010, 350 billion photos were taken worldwide, but since then that number has increased by 1.4 trillion per year. The camera plays an important role for consumers when purchasing a phone, which is why Corning said it had no choice but to enter this market.
