New bug in Android Auto causes problems with Google Assistant

Some Android Auto users are experiencing problems with the Google Assistant in the car. There are two complaints reported on the Android Auto support forum. This is what’s going on.

Google Assistant goes black in Android Auto

Complaints are reported on the Android Auto support forum about the Google Assistant in Android Auto. Google’s smart sidekick doesn’t respond to it hot word “Hey Google.” On the other hand, the Google Assistant’s screen goes black when called up. Sometimes the complete navigation bar at the bottom disappears. The touch controls still work.

The number of complaints on the forum has been steadily increasing for several weeks, and the first message is now on the status trending. The common denominator in these complaints seems to be Android 13. The complainants all have a phone that runs on this Android version. One possible workaround is to uninstall the Google app to rollback updates and then turn off auto-update. This is of course far from ideal and we are therefore waiting for Google for a solution.

Problem with text-to-speech output

Another problem on the same forum is also about the Google Assistant in combination with Android Auto. For a small number of people, text-to-speech output appears to be no longer available when receiving messages. Here too we have to wait for Google for a solution.
