Apple Audiobooks+ coming?
Since Apple announced in 2018 that it would not only be a hardware and software company, but also a services company, the company has launched several new subscriptions such as Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+ and finally the Apple One package. .
Now, a report from The Economist suggests that Apple could launch an audiobook service later this year. Can we soon welcome Apple Audiobooks+ to our devices?
An opportunity for Apple
The Economist’s article centers on Apple’s efforts to compete with Netflix, Disney and Amazon for subscription services. According to the website, the next service is already in the starting blocks. For example, there are currently indications that Apple could build a service around audiobooks. “Later this year” we could find out more.
According to rumors, Apple has been working on new services for some time. Adding audiobooks to that mix would certainly make sense. Amazon, for example, has had Audible, a giant in the audiobook market, under its wing for some time.
But Audible isn’t available worldwide, and that’s where we think Apple’s opportunity lies. If it can launch its own audiobook service in a short time and on a large scale, it could very well be a success. Apple already has enough material, because the Audiobook Store is well stocked with (Dutch) audiobooks.
The start of more rumours?
We take this news with a grain of salt. The Economist is the first source to mention such an audiobook subscription. But maybe the news is just the spark for more solid leaks. In addition, it would fit well with the strategy of the Cupertino company. If Apple has anything in the pipeline, then the spring or fall event would be an appropriate stage for the announcement.
