Netflix was afraid of this streaming service
Popcorn Time was a popular platform to watch unpaid series and movies. The streaming service has now announced that it is pulling the plug, and that happens immediately. The service was released in 2014 and has grown in the number of active users in recent years.
Popcorn Time stops
Popcorn Time is no more. The makers of the streaming service have announced that it will stop for the service after about 8 years. Popcorn Time was an alternative to paid streaming services and was free to use. However, it was far from legal and the service was often discredited. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings previously said that “piracy and programs such as Popcorn Time remain one of the biggest competitors”. Popcorn Time allowed users to watch movies and series that were sometimes unreleased. Several torrents were used for this, where you could immediately start watching a series or movies. The disadvantage was that if there were not enough active torrents active, it could take a while before they could actually be viewed.
The service was established in 2014 and has now been discontinued with immediate effect. The reason is not shared. The enthusiasm for the service did decrease, and the criticism of the service from Hollywood, among others, also grew. Several lawsuits have already been filed.
