Google reveals the final name of Wear OS and the smartwatches that will receive the upgrade

Wear OS 3.0, Wear OS 3 or just Wear? Google is now clearing the ambiguity about the name of the new operating system for smartwatches. In addition, we learn more about the smartwatches that qualify.

WearOS 3

Google and Samsung announced in May that they are working together on a new operating system for smartwatches. Samsung is saying goodbye to Tizen, and Google is saying goodbye to Wear OS for this project. At the time, Google talked about Wear, but now a Community Member from Google is talking about Wear OS 3 and we’ll keep that name for convenience.

In addition, the Google employee also releases some more details about the smartwatches that are eligible for an upgrade to the new operating system for smartwatches.

  • Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Cellular/LTE
  • Mobvoi TicWatch E3

In addition, Movoi and Fossil smartwatches are yet to be announced. It looks like these will ship with the current Wear OS and then be able to upgrade to version 3 in the future. We already know that Fossil won’t be updating existing watches to the new Wear OS.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic would be the first Samsung smartwatches with Wear OS 3, according to Sammobile. Future smartwatches from the South Korean company will also run on Wear OS 3. Samsung smartwatches that run on Tizen will continue to run on Tizen. Samsung has already shared a teaser of the new Wear OS 3 and you can find it here.

Know for yourself

The choice to move to Wear OS 3 is yours. It is about opt-in where you can indicate yourself whether you want to go for the new system or stay with the old and trusted Wear OS. Google will give you more details in advance, but that will take a while: “We expect our partners to roll out the system update midway to the second half of 2022.”

Google indicates that it will continue to release updates for the current Wear OS such as updates for Gboard and the new Google Play. In addition, the Wear OS watches will be able to count on two years of security updates from launch.
