Pay for sharing password
Netflix is starting to charge for password sharing in more and more countries. Many people share their passwords with friends and/or family, allowing them to watch Netflix for free. As a result, these people do not have to subscribe to the service. Netflix has already announced that it wants to tackle this, because it believes that this means that people are piggybacking on someone else’s account and that it is losing money itself.
Canada was one of the first countries where Netflix announced password sharing prices. Per so-called ‘sub account’ people pay six dollars there. The streaming service now indicates in a message that the introduction of paying for sharing passwords has resulted in more new subscribers. So mission accomplished for Netflix.

Now also to the United States
In the same message, Netflix also indicates that it will bring the payment obligation to the United States. This should apply from the end of June. The price has not been officially announced, but it is expected to be as high as in Canada. If password sharing is activated, you can link up to two sub-accounts to one main account. Those sub-accounts keep their own profile, password, username and personal recommendations.
For people who no longer want to use someone else’s account, it will be possible to transfer their profile to a new paid subscription and account. Their viewing history, recommendations, saved and downloaded movies, series and games will be transferred.
There are, however, a number of conditions. For example, with the Standard subscription (11.99 euros p/m) you can share the account with one person, the Premium subscription (15.99 euros p/m) with two people and the Basic subscription (7.99 euros p/m) with no one. The latter does not offer the possibility to share the account with others.
When in the Netherlands and Belgium?
It is not yet known when payment for sharing passwords will be officially rolled out in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is expected that sharing passwords here will cost 3.99 euros per month. So this would be a lot lower than in Canada and the US.
