Netflix is not going to ban account sharing after all

On the Netflix website you could read recently how they want to prevent account sharing. After considerable criticism, the streaming service is now (somewhat) backing down.

Read on after the ad.

Netflix is not going to ban account sharing after all

Last week it leaked that Netflix was going to make password sharing more difficult. For example, you had to log in to your own WiFi network once a month to watch a film or series. If you don’t do this, you would run the risk of being blocked. You must then request a temporary code to still be able to watch.

This information was available on the Netflix website. Once the news broke, many users disagreed. There were also many questions on Twitter from people who were often away from home for a long time.

Whether all the criticism has now ensured that Netflix has taken a good look at the plans is not known. But Netflix has since pulled the information from its website. They have also now officially confirmed that this way of preventing Netflix account sharing was actually only intended for the countries of Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. By mistake, other countries had also gained access to this information.

If residents of these countries still want to share the Netflix account, they can do so after paying $ 2.99. Netflix uses the IP address, account history, and device ID to check if an account is logged in at the home location.

Postponement is not adjustment

It is of course now a matter of time that they will extend the rules to other countries as well. It is not known exactly when that will happen. The company did say that sharing Netflix will no longer be allowed from 2023. It is striking that Netflix published the message below on Twitter in 2017.
