Netflix is developing new video games and testing cloud gaming service

Netflix has already released its own mobile games for Android and iOS smartphones. The company has now announced that 55 more games are in development. Mike Verdu, Head of Games, also hinted that Netflix is launching a Considering cloud gaming service.

Netflix recently announced that it intends to expand its gaming offering. The company therefore wants to set up its own games studio in Finland, for example. In his recently published quarterly report the streaming provider also confirmed that 55 new mobile games are currently in development.

But that’s not all. Because despite relatively little interest and a low number of players, the company is apparently also considering its own cloud gaming service. That left Mike Verdu, head of games at Netflix, on a conference look through in San Francisco.

Does Netflix want to launch its own cloud gaming service?

Accordingly, the company apparently wants to build a foothold in the gaming industry beyond its mobile games. Verdu said:

We are very seriously considering a cloud gaming offer so we can reach our members on TVs and PCs. We’re going to approach this the same way we did with mobile, which is start small, be humble, be thoughtful, and then scale up.

Google had previously failed with a similar project, because: The search engine giant recently discontinued its Stadia cloud gaming service. Netflix, meanwhile, believes the company can succeed where Google failed. Mike Verdu on this:

It’s a step we think we should take to meet members where they are, on the devices they watch Netflix on.

Over 2.4 million new subscribers

In order to implement its plans, the company also announced another gaming studio in California. After Netflix lost subscribers for the first time in April 2022, things currently seem to be going better again. The streaming provider recently confirmed a cheaper subscription that includes advertising.

The current quarterly figures are also better than expected. Because Netflix was able to gain around 2.4 million new subscribers in the third quarter of 2022. The company had previously forecast growth of around one million new customers.
