Eveline’s husband is a true Scrooge who always insists on saving for unforeseen expenses. Eveline prefers to let the money roll. And that sometimes clashes.
“My husband Willem is occasionally stingy. He thinks everything is too expensive and keeps insisting that we should save more for ‘unforeseen expenses’. That clashes, because I think that money should flow. After me the deluge, something like that. Anyway, I often call him Scrooge when he asks me if I still have a hand at all.

The other day it was screeching again when I announced that I was going to the city for a while. Willem was already grumpy because we had just finished an expensive car repair. As I walked towards the door he grumbled, “Don’t buy too much, eh?”
That pissed me off so much. I felt like a little kid who was told by her father not to spend all her pocket money on sweets. As if I am under guardianship of my husband. ‘I’ll buy out the whole city, okay?!’ I yelled back. While I was on the bike, the steam was still coming out of my ears.
Have I completely gone crazy with my debit card? Of course not. But I did treat myself to a nice lunch, from our joint account of course.”
