Single motherhood is buffalo, but it also has advantages. And sometimes those benefits come face to face with your offspring.

Fiene (37), mother of Thijn (9) and Max (7):

“My divorce was three years ago, the boys didn’t know any better than their mother was alone. As far as they were concerned, my private life was limited to our lives with the three of us and the friends who came to visit us. In the meantime, I did have a dating life on the weekends they went to see their father. Not very active and mostly digital. But it happened once, after a spontaneous appointment in a wine bar.

On the couch

We kept our dates under the radar, wanted to leave the kids out of it. But jitters crawl where they can’t go, and so I agreed – actually against my principles – once at my home, after childhood. The boys rarely woke up, and we would be gentle. We had a drink and kiss and some food on the couch in the living room.

Got caught

Until we were suddenly woken up at four o’clock in the morning by two bare legs in boxer shorts: ‘Mama, who is that gentleman?’ Max had to pee and had seen a light downstairs. Faster than the sound, we adjusted our only half-dressed clothes, whereupon my date jokingly extended his hand and introduced himself. ‘Oh,’ said my son, seemingly uninterested, and went back to bed.

“Mama, who is that gentleman?”

Fortunately, the date stuck and we have been meeting openly ever since. The boys think he’s fantastic, but not before Max dryly suggested: ‘My mother always sleeps in bed, next time you should fit in with that.’”
