‘My children don’t have to exercise’

Nothing in life is black or white, and parenting always brings dilemmas. Even if the choice seems so clear at times.

Nina (40) lives with Franca (45). Together they have two daughters: Maddy (9) and Pip (6).

“From the moment I tried on running shoes, I run. Even marathons since I was twenty. I can’t live without sport, it keeps me physically and mentally strong. My girlfriend also likes to move. She plays tennis competitions and soccer in a veteran team.

“Everything that smacks of sport they hate wholeheartedly”

How ironic is it that we, of all people, had two daughters who despise anything that smacks of sports. Swimming lesson: drama. Ballet: not an option. They don’t want to play football, not hockey, Maddy liked gymnastics for a month, until she discovered that you have to train at least every week. Whatever we offer, they don’t want.

Development

Maddy is very creative. She made the most beautiful drawings and paintings, and crochets baskets for cats. Pip has recently started scouting and is out there all mornings. Both develop broadly next to school, and that’s what it’s all about for us. So we decided that sports are not necessary. With pain in our hearts, because the physical effort, learning to perform in and with a team and a little competitive drive Franca and I consider important educational elements.

To play sports

Meanwhile, Maddy is also a bit on the heavy side. We keep that under control with a healthy diet, but a little more exercise would do her good. We try to offer it in a playful way. Going for a sprint during a walk in the woods, hours to the playground. That is also moving.

“Their creative talents are just as important”

While I keep hoping that one day our daughters will see the light and suddenly want to take up riding, rowing or whatever, for now I commend them for their creative and resourceful talents. They are equally important.”
