Motorola’s new foldable costs less than 900 euros

It was not until October 2022 that Motorola launched a new Razr foldable in Europe, and now the manufacturer is following suit and is supplying two new foldables in clamshell format, the Razr 40 Ultra and Razr 40. This is in the new models, which are to be positioned as competition for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Flip 5.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra with large external display

The most striking new feature of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is first of all the new large external display with its diagonal of 3.6 inches. No other model in the clamshell design currently has a larger outer screen: The Galaxy Flip 4 (test) only has a 1.9-inch display, while the Oppo Find N2 Flip, which is not available in Germany, already has 3.26 inches, which is what makes it so it does not have to be opened for every activity.

The pOLED outer display of Motorola’s flip phone also has a refresh rate of 144 Hertz and is protected by Gorilla Glass 7. When unfolded, it reveals a flexible 6.9-inch pOLED display with a refresh rate of 165 Hertz and a 22:9 aspect ratio.

According to Motorola, the Razr foldable has received a “redesigned teardrop hinge” that features “the industry’s first dual-axis tracking, minimizing the size of the system.” It apparently closes seamlessly and is said to be “the thinnest when closed” compared to other foldables. In addition, the hinge system in combination with Ultra Thin Glass makes the interior display almost wrinkle-free.

The manufacturer uses a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor for the processor. The SoC (system-on-a-chip) introduced in May 2022 is not the latest model from Qualcomm, but it should provide sufficient performance. Incidentally, it’s the same chip that was installed in last year’s Razr foldable and Samsung’s fourth-generation folding devices from 2022. When it comes to storage, Motorola relies on eight gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of flash memory.

As for the camera, the Razr 40 Ultra has a dual camera of 12 and 13 megapixels for wide and ultra wide-angle shots. The wide-angle camera has an f/1.5 aperture and optical image stabilization. The selfie camera comes with a 32-megapixel sensor.

Other features include a 3,800 mAh battery that can be wired with 30 watts or wirelessly charged with 5 watts. There are also stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos sound on board. Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4, the device is not protected against water according to the IPX8 protection class, but only against splash water according to IP52.

The Razr 40 Ultra is offered in black, “glacier blue” and magenta and costs from 1,199 euros.

Motorola Razr 40: So far the cheapest foldable

With the Razr 40, Motorola has a kind of “Lite” variant up its sleeve, with which the manufacturer is entering new dimensions for a foldable. Because the device costs 899 euros for the first time under 1,000 euros – the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was previously considered the cheapest foldable, which cost 1,049 euros when it was launched in summer 2022.

In terms of equipment, it offers a little less than the Ultra model: The OLED outer display has a diagonal of only 1.5 inches, while the inner display is identical to the Ultra model and supports 144 Hertz.

Motorola uses a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip as the processor, which is supported by eight gigabytes of LPDDR5 RAM and 128 or 256 gigabytes of UFS 2.2 memory.

The wide-angle camera of the Razr 40 has a 64-megapixel sensor with f/1.7 aperture, OIS, laser autofocus and ambient light sensor. The second sensor with 13 megapixels and f/2.2 aperture is responsible for macro and ultra wide-angle shots (FOV 120 degrees). As with the Ultra model, Motorola installs a 32-megapixel selfie camera inside.

On the software side, Android 13 is preinstalled on both. The operating system is largely based on Google’s stock Android. As usual, Motorola has added a few of its own functions, such as various gestures to activate the camera. With regard to the update guarantee, the manufacturer promises three major Android updates and four years of security patches.

For the Motorola Razr40, the manufacturer requires 899.99 euros. It should available from mid-July in the colors “Sage Green”, “Vanilla Cream” and “Summer Lilac”.
