Motorola Edge 30 Ultra review

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. Source Motorola, fair use

Is the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra indeed a worthy competitor to the iPhone 14 and the Galaxy S22 Ultra? Well, Apple and Samsung are going to have a hard time…

We would almost forget, but besides Samsung and Apple there are other brands. For example, Motorola has been attracting attention for several years with good phones for a budget price, and is therefore showing rapid growth. With the Edge series, Motorola also wants to play in the top segment.

One plus the Edge 30 Ultra has already won, the competitive price. With a suggested retail price of € 899, this is an affordable flagship device compared to the one and a half to twice as expensive iPhone 14 Pro Max and Galaxy S22 Ultra. but what about the other points? We’re going to look at that now.

Beautiful design and solid construction

A strong plus is the solid construction that we are used to from Motorola. In addition, we find the screen curved to the sides, the waterfall display that we know from the first Edge. The dimensions are average at 161.8 x 73.5 x 8.4 mm, and the mass of 198.5 g is also not exceptional. The camera block on the back sticks out because of the zoom, but not very prominently. The frame is made of metal. Small minus is the water resistance, which is not certified like other flagship phones.

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra charges in 7 minutes

Like all Chinese top devices, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra has an excellent fast charger supplied in the box. With 125 W charging power, the nevertheless hefty 4610mAh battery is charged in an incredible 7 minutes. In comparison, this is 10 times as fast as the iPhone 14. And you also have to buy the fast charger for a hefty price.

Does a friend not have such a nice fast charger? Don’t worry, they can simply enjoy it via the 10 W wireless charger that is built into the device. Of course you can also charge the Ultra wirelessly, at a speed, 50 watts, that you can’t even get with wire on most other flagship devices.

State of the art hardware

Also in terms of hardware, Motorola has not cut corners on the Edge 30 Ultra. A state of the art Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory make this a speed monster that you should not underestimate. For comparison, the average PC also contains 8 GB of RAM.

This powerful hardware is also necessary, given the number of pixels of the 6.67inch FHD+ pOLED screen (1080 x 2400 pizels), with a 144Hz refresh rate, that must be controlled. This means that games play very smoothly and pleasantly, without stuttering. This makes the Ultra an excellent gaming phone. Thanks to the Snapdragon Elite Gaming function, you can stream from your smartphone to a large screen or beamer.

200 megapixel camera on the Edge 30 Ultra

Like the iPhone 14 and Galaxy S 22, this phone uses pixel binning to get sharper images. That means that pixels are merged and therefore photos are 15 megapixels by default. It is possible to turn off this option, so that you can record the full 200 megapixels on the sensitive sensor plate.

Thanks to the lightning-fast hardware, recording high-resolution video (8K at 30fps or 4K at 60fps) is no problem. A downside of this phone is the poor night photography compared to the champion in this field, the iPhone 14. The microphone is also an improvement compared to the iPhone 14.

Conclusion Motorola Edge 30 Ultra review

This device is a real Motorola, with its large battery, its competitive price and solid build quality. The device shows that smartphones other than iPhone and Samsung Galaxy are now maturing and offering competitive quality for a competitive price.

Do you really want the very best camera quality and the Apple feel? Then you can choose the iPhone. Do you want the excellent Knox security and the Samsung feeling? Then choose Samsung. But do you want more value for money? Then the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is simply the better device, leaving these two easygoing brands to bite the dust.
