More than half of readers concerned about data collection from Xiaomi

It was big news last week: Xiaomi phones would collect a lot of data that is also in the sensitive spheres. Reason for us to consult our readers: what do you think about Xiaomi phones collecting a lot of sensitive data? More than 60 percent are concerned.

Your data on Chinese Xiaomi servers

The problem is not only that the phones collect a lot of data and even more than the competition: it is also stored on Chinese servers. Xiaomi itself has said that it is an open, transparent and independently operating (and managed) organization, plus that it is fully GDPR compliant.

However, that may not work in all cases. Many readers find it worrisome that the Chinese phone maker seems to handle data in this way. The discovery was made by Lithuanian security researchers who showed that Xiaomi even forwards the names of the songs you listen to via the media player. Even if you do it offline.

Everyone collects data

Collecting data in itself is nothing new: all telephone companies do that to a certain extent, but Xiaomi would make it very furious. Especially since Chinese servers may be viewable by the Chinese government. What do our readers think? That’s what we asked this week in the AW Poll. The verdict is clear: 62 percent don’t like the fact that Xiaomi collects so much data.

15 percent say they don’t care what information the manufacturer collects from their phone, 18 percent don’t know what to think and 5 percent have a different opinion. Suomynona is clearly someone who has chosen the ‘I don’t care’ option. suomynona: “If I don’t use Xiaomi apps, do they only know which apps I have installed and how long I’ve been using them? What else do they know that Google doesn’t? I think if my surfing behavior doesn’t stand out among those crowds of Xioami users, I don’t have to worry too much.”

The poll result

Edwin1 is also a big fan of Chinese phones and says he will continue to buy a Poco until the bitter end. “Google and the Chinese already know everything about me.” Well, aeijsink does not agree with that: “Chinese junk. Ignore them just like those other Chinese brands. You don’t pay for these phones with cash, but by sharing data (consciously or not) (espionage).

The writer of this article choked a bit on the foe yong hai of the reaction of K03N: “Well, whether it’s google or xiaomi or China or usa, they all have your data. Only apparently people here find it quite scary if the Chinese are also allowed to know what kind of porn you watch…”

Have a nice Sunday evening and see you next poll!
