Mobile internet will become even faster due to new auction

Mobile internet will become even faster in the Netherlands. The auction of the 3.5 Ghz band allows the three providers in our country to increase the capacity on their network.

New auction

Micky Adriaanse, Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, has announced that the 3.5 GHz bands will be auctioned in the Netherlands. This can be read in the amended National Frequency Plan. Last year it was already clear that the European Union will oblige us to open up and auction the 3.5 GHz band. This should happen this year. Due to the change in the frequency plan, it is now possible for the providers to win frequency space on this band and thus give their network extra space. This allows the providers to make their 5G services even faster. The auction should take place in the summer of this year.

The space on the 3.5 Ghz band that will be made available to providers is currently still in use by local users and Inmarsat. The latter is a British telecommunications company that uses the band for emergency communication from aircraft, among other things. After the auction they will have to leave the 3.5 Ghz band. Local users should therefore leave this band.

Faster mobile internet

Last Monday we wrote that – according to a German study – the Netherlands has the best mobile network in the world. KPN is proclaimed the provider with the best network. You can read more about this in this article.

Nevertheless, we notice that data traffic is increasing enormously due to digitalisation, and that providers are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the speed of their network. Extra capacity will offer a solution and this is something that Vodafone, KPN and T-Mobile have been waiting for for some time. You can get this extra capacity for a network through new bands and extra radio frequencies, among other things. The decision of the Ministry of Economic Affairs should now make this possible.

Other plans and requirements European Union

In addition to the news that the European Union obliges the Netherlands to open up the 3.5 Ghz band, they come up with even more ideas in Brussels. For example, they are working on the Netflix tax. This is a plan from the European Commission that requires large tech and streaming companies to pay a fee to telecom companies. However, this plan could pose a major threat to the internet and result in higher costs that consumers will soon have to pay. You can read more about this in this article.
