Microsoft’s source code viewed by Russian hackers
Microsoft reveals that Russian hackers were able to view its source code. These are the same hackers who are behind the recent major cyberattack targeting the United States.
Microsoft had previously confirmed that it downloaded malware from SolarWinds. The hackers had modified the files in question. Today’s disclosure is the first indication that Russian hackers have been able to gain access to Microsoft’s internal systems and its source code. But there is no precision on the nature of the source code. Is it the one from Windows?
“We detected unusual activity with a small number of internal accounts”Microsoft explains. “Upon examination, we discovered that an account had been used to view source code in a number of source code repositories.”, adds the group. Microsoft states that the hackers were able to view the source code, but they were not able to modify it.
What about the security of users and their data? Microsoft says it has not found “No proof of access to online services or customer data”. In addition, there is no indication “That our systems were used to attack other people”.
Microsoft is continuing its investigation into the intrusion of Russian hackers. The group says it wants to play the card of transparency on this case, hence the speech today.
