Android

maybe it will be possible soon

WhatsApp is testing a function to send large photos. We may soon be able to send files of up to 2GB to each other. Read in this article why we need this.

WhatsApp test function for sending larger photos

WhatsApp has released beta version 22.7.0.76. It finally brings our iPhone’s full support for iOS 15. But, this isn’t the only major WhatsApp news. The messaging app has also started testing sending larger photos (and other files) up to 2GB. That’s a huge amount and would solve common WhatsApp frustrations.

This feature of larger photos is currently being extensively tested by beta users in Argentina, according to reliable WhatsApp source WABetainfo. Some users can now share media files up to 2GB with each other there.

WhatsApp’s photo compression causes quality loss

If you currently want to send photos with WhatsApp in the Netherlands, we advise against using these photos professionally. We can only share media files of up to 100MB here. To make sending photos as easy as possible, WhatsApp reduces the file size of the photos by (put very simply) merging pixels. This is called compression.

As a result, the quality of photos makes way for quantity and speed. This compression has drawbacks; Sending a song is difficult and some long videos cannot be sent by WhatsApp. Thus, the quality of photos is always lost in WhatsApp. If we can send larger photos with WhatsApp, this problem will be solved.

With competitor Telegram, you have been sending large photos via the messaging app since 2020. We’re not sure if this feature will become a reality for WhatsApp. WhatsApp can choose not to roll out this feature if the results in Argentina are unfavorable.

Other new features in WhatsApp

Although sending large photos is not (yet) available in the Netherlands, WhatsApp has already added other new functions to support iOS 15. For example, you now see profile photos in the notifications of messages and the app supports focus mode.

WhatsApp emoji reactions

In addition, the messaging app from Meta (formerly Facebook) is working on quick responses to the app. This way you don’t have to look up the thumb every time in the emoji list, but it is under shortcuts. Also, this thumbs up next to the new ‘Comments’ does not take up an entire message, but it is small next to the message you want to confirm. Another new feature, “Multi-device Compatibility 2.0”, lets users use the same WhatsApp account on two different devices.
