make your home even smarter

Apple plans to give several HomeKit devices a new chip. This makes your home much smarter. iPhoned tells you what you can (we hope) do with this.

Read on after the ad.

Apple HomeKit devices: new chip

According to the latest rumors, several devices will receive a new chip for Apple HomeKit. The HomePod (mini), Apple TV, iPhone and iPad will receive a major upgrade. But what are the expectations for this new chip from Apple HomeKit and what will it benefit you in the future?

More possible with Apple Homekit

You can already do a lot with the current chip in your iPhone (11 and higher), Apple Watch Series (6 and higher) and the AirTags. Thanks to the current chip (the U1), you always know where you left your iPad or where your key ring (with AirTag) is hidden.

According to new rumors, Apple will upgrade the U1 chip and give it more options. All Apple products will then receive this new chip for HomeKit. The great thing about this is that you can then automatically switch on the light when you walk into the kitchen.

That is already possible, but then you have to install a motion sensor or a camera in your kitchen, for example. The new chip makes it a lot easier to set this up and you no longer need other devices. The devices with the new chip do this by creating a kind of ‘areas’ in your house and determining your location together with your iPhone, Apple Watch or AirTag.

It also becomes easier to assign certain actions to specific people. Do you and your girlfriend come home together and step into the living room? Then the television turns on automatically and the curtains close. If you are alone at home once, you can, for example, set it to automatically switch on your television with PlayStation.

When will the new chip for Apple HomeKit come?

According to the rumors, the development of the new chip for Apple HomeKit is still in its infancy. The announcement is likely not going to happen before the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference. And even that seems very early at this point. In addition, these kinds of early rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt. But that Apple is tinkering with HomeKit is one thing that is certain.
