13 inch MacBook Pro: M2 is faster than M1 model…
The new 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 has some nice improvements compared to the previous M1 version. First of all, the M2 chip is a bit faster than the M1 version that was in the MacBook Pro 2020. You will especially notice this when you do a lot of photo and video editing on your MacBook Pro.
It is striking that the M2 chip is not faster than that in the MacBook Pro 2021. It has an M1 Pro chip, which is smoother than the M2 chip.
… but the SSD is slower
There is also more striking news. The cheapest 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 has an SSD that is slower than the SSD in the previous-generation 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1. This is apparent from the video below by Max Tech.
In the video, the speed of the SSD is tested with the program Blackmagic Disk Speed. This checks the throughput, write and read speeds of the SSD. It is striking that the 256GB SSD in the MacBook Pro with M2 is slower than that in the MacBook Pro with M1.

The benchmark shows that the write speed of the M2 is about 34 percent lower than that of the MacBook Pro with M1. The read speed is even slower. This saves about 50 percent with the M1 MacBook Pro.
The more expensive 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro with more storage does not seem to have worse SSD performance. Zollotech’s YouTube video shows that the 512GB M2 MacBook Pro has the same SSD speed as the old M1 model.
Here’s what’s going on with the 256GB SSD in the M2 MacBook Pro
The M1 MacBook Pro has two 128GB SSDs. If a device has multiple SSDs and combines them, they can be used in parallel. This makes the read and write commands faster. The new MacBook Pro with M2 only has one 256GB SSD. This makes this storage a lot slower.
It remains to be seen whether the MacBook Air 2022 also has this problem. Apple officially announced the new MacBook Air 2022 at the WWDC event. The laptop has a new design and a powerful M2 chip. It is not known whether the entry-level MacBook Air 2022 also has one SSD.
