‘Let’s stop those overly hysterical children’s parties’

Hysterical theme, bouncy castle in the garden, hours of entertainment: children’s parties are becoming more and more exuberant. If it’s up to Samm Davidson, it could all be a bit less. “Let’s stick to a plastic tablecloth, some cheap decorations and a slice of cake.”

Where you used to have the time of your life with nail poo and decorating slices of cake, nowadays many children’s parties are not complete without a giant cake, magician and striking theme. From Samm Davidson – who also participated in the hysteria – it may be a little less.

High expectations

Samm’s daughter can already picture it: she wants a LOL Surprise themed party (you know, those dolls), including a few animals and a meet-and-greet with a well-known YouTuber. Samm has to swallow the high expectations of her daughter, but understands where it comes from. “I spoil my kids more than I should, I admit. At her previous children’s party, each child got a pair of glittery wings and watched a reptile show together under an arch of balloons.”

Hysterical children’s parties

Also, according to Samm, parents have created a certain culture in which hysterical parties are the most normal thing in the world, especially among Hollywood stars and influencers. Khloé Kardashian, who arranged hundreds of balloons for her daughter’s fourth birthday, is an extreme example of this. It creates high and unrealistic expectations, says Samm. “And because many parents don’t have the money, time or energy to organize such a perfectly decorated party, we feel defeated.”

As before

As far as Samm is concerned, the bar can therefore be a bit lower. “You may not see it as your responsibility that other parents feel insecure about this, but I do see it that way,” she writes. “Let’s stick to a plastic tablecloth, some cheap decorations and a slice of cake, just like old times. Don’t turn your child’s birthday into a wedding reception, it will all benefit us.”
