Lenovo introduces Yoga Slim 7 Carbon
With the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Carbon, Lenovo has introduced what it claims to be the “lightest 14-inch OLED notebook in the world”. An AI-enabled Thinkedge mini PC is also coming.
The Chinese computer manufacturer Lenovo presented a number of new devices at its own Tech-World 2021, including new consumer PCs, but also platforms for companies such as the AI-enabled Thinkedge SE70. The new yoga devices are also among the first notebooks to have the next-gen Windows 11 operating system from Microsoft on board. Lenovo has given the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon the label “lightest 14-inch OLED notebook in the world”.

Yoga Slim 7 Carbon: Slim, but stable
The 14-inch device is 14.9 millimeters thick and weighs around 1.1 kilograms. Nevertheless, the notebook should be stable due to its carbon housing fused with a magnesium alloy. The OLED screen is protected with Gorilla Glass and has a resolution of 2,880 by 1,800 pixels. The mobile AMD processors Ryzen 7 (5800U) or Ryzen 5 (5600U) should ensure the performance. Depending on the version, you have eight or 16 gigabytes of RAM and an Nvidia Geforce MX450 at your side. The internal memory amounts to 512 gigabytes or one terabyte.
The device has an Alexa built-in with Alexa Show Mode, which is supposed to offer an Echo Show-like experience. Also on board are WLAN 6 and an infrared camera with an electric shutter release. The Lenovo Smart Assist is also said to offer functions such as flip-to-boot. There are also privacy warnings when other people look at the display. When users move away from their notebook, the Slim 7 Carbon automatically locks the screen.
Yoga Slim 7 Pro: Notebook for creative people
With its big brother, the Yoga Slim 7 Pro, Lenovo wants to appeal to creative people in particular. The device has a 16-inch display with a resolution of 2,560 by 1,600 inches, is 17.9 millimeters thick and weighs 2.1 kilograms. Dolby Atmos should ensure good sound. AMD processors (up to Ryzen 7 5800H) and up to 16 gigabytes of RAM are also used here. The internal memory is up to one terabyte. There are two USB-C and two USB-A ports as well as HDMI. A headphone connection and an SD card slot are also integrated.
While the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon will be available from November 2021 and will come onto the market at a starting price of 1,099 euros, the prices and availability of the Slim 7 Pro have not yet been determined. Another device, the Ideapad Duet 5 Chromebook with a 13-inch screen, should also come in November and cost from 499 euros.
The new Thinkedge SE70 will only be available from the first half of 2022 – and then initially only in selected markets. Whether Germany will be there from the start is just as little known as the price that Lenovo will be calling for its new Edge AI platform.
The device was developed in collaboration with Amazon’s cloud service AWS and powered by Nvidia’s Jetson Xavier NX platform. Lenovo’s stated goal is to “meet the growing demands of intelligent transformation in the areas of logistics, transportation and smart cities, retail, healthcare and manufacturing”. Specifically, it is about opening up the possibilities of CV applications to companies.
Thinkedge SE70: automate tasks
Thanks to the preinstalled AWS Panorama Device SDK, companies can turn everyday IP cameras into intelligent cameras, which then run CV apps on the edge. AWS Panorama can then automate tasks that actually require human inspection, such as monitoring objects or the inventory of retailers, as Lenovo says.
The AI-capable edge application of the Thinkedge SE70 delivers up to 21 trillion arithmetic operations per second (TOPS), can execute neural networks in parallel and process data from several high-resolution sensors. “AI applications at the edge have enormous potential for the intelligent transformation of companies, such as the use of computer vision to track warehouse and logistics processes or the automation of manufacturing processes,” said Jon Pershke, Vice President of Strategy and Emerging Business at Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group.
