Legendary Nintendo duo would no longer be successful today

Nintendo fans need to be strong now: According to a former developer of Rare, a game like Banjo-Kazooie would no longer be successful today. However, the fans see it very differently and are still hoping for a comeback of the lively duo.

Is Banjo-Kazooie outdated?

Anyone who played video games on the Nintendo 64 as a child or teenager he probably has good memories of Banjo Kazooie. The platformer from the British developer Rare was released on the console in 1998 and is now considered a solid cult game.

The game’s success spawned two direct sequels and a couple of spin-offs, before the series more or less disappeared after 2008. Nevertheless, numerous fans are still longing for a sequel or a new edition.

According to Grant Kirkhope, who has worked as a composer on numerous rare games, this wish is unrealistic. In his opinion there is no target audience for a game like Banjo-Kazooie these days:

“I think Rare would be open to a sequel if they found the right team, but I don’t feel like that team exists. I’m also not convinced that the audience is there for a game like this.” (Source: TheGamer)

This statement met with little approval on the Internet. Especially on Twitter, numerous users have a completely different opinion than Kirkhope.

As a counter-argument, the game Yooka-Laylee is mentioned several times, which is considered to be the successor in the spirit of Banjo-Kazooie and was financed solely through crowdfunding.

Other users see the problem less with the target group, but with publishers Microsoft, who have owned the license since Rare took over. In fact, since 2008, the company hasn’t made much of an effort to bring back the popular brand, after the third part flopped on the Xbox 360.

Announcement sparked internet hype

With one exception! Banjo and Kazooie are guest characters in the Nintendo Switch game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The announcement sparked at that time downright hype and tears of joy. As this reaction video on YouTube proves, for example:
