Learning Ukrainian is very popular
Because of the war in Ukraine we see a lot of suffering. From bombs that destroy entire blocks of flats to large flows of refugees trying to save their lives. On the other hand, it is nice to see that the willingness to help in the Netherlands and Belgium is very high. Refuging Ukrainian families are welcomed with open arms by many Dutch and Belgians and start – sort of – a new life in Western Europe.
The biggest problem at the beginning is obviously the language barrier. This is one of the reasons why learning Ukrainian is very popular at the moment. And there are plenty of apps on your iPhone that help you master the basics.
Duolingo – Learn Ukrainian in a playful way
The most popular app for learning the basics of a language is and remains Duolingo. And the same goes for Ukrainian. Even if you have no knowledge of the language at all, thanks to the playful design and a logical structure of the first words you learn, you will quickly achieve success. In addition, Duolingo is completely free, although you can make learning more enjoyable with in-app purchases. But this is absolutely not necessary!
Duolingo is therefore the perfect app to learn Ukrainian, but it does have one major drawback. Because you cannot learn the Ukrainian language from Dutch, only from English. Now (certainly in the beginning) it concerns words that are so simple that you can also progress with very poor English, but in the later units of study this may become more difficult. Is the English language not a problem for you? Then Duolingo is the app you need.
Lengo – for your Ukrainian vocabulary
Lengo is a fairly new app for learning a language and has mainly focused on expanding your vocabulary. So you don’t immediately learn the grammar, but you can quickly make yourself understood by joining words together. It is not the most efficient way to master a language completely, but when it comes to communication only, Lengo offers advantages. This app is also free, although certain themes cost ‘coins’. You can purchase these separately as an in-app purchase, or you can take out a subscription for unlimited coins.
A big advantage compared to Duolingo is that you learn Ukrainian words from Dutch. That makes it just that little bit easier to stamp words.

Netflix – watch a Ukrainian movie with subtitles
Many Dutch people claim that they have learned English simply by watching many films with subtitles. Now we don’t quite believe that, but the fact is that it helps enormously to watch movies and series in the original language with subtitles – simply as a support for learning a language. And where better to do that than on Netflix?
The range of Ukrainian films on offer is not overwhelming, but ‘Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s fight for Freedom’ is certainly worth checking out. The 2015 film is more current than ever, and available with Dutch subtitles.
The best Ukrainian translation service
Are you having trouble learning Ukrainian? Under the circumstances we find a little cheat can. And the best translation service of the moment?
Anyone who just yelled Google Translate should stand in a booth and be ashamed of themselves. Because Reverso Translate is so much better than Google’s translator and works for Dutch and Ukrainian. There is also an app available for the iPhone, but for some strange reason it doesn’t have Ukrainian in it yet. Until then, you can place the translation website on your home screen.
