learn the language of your holiday country with Duolingo

The sun is shining and many people are probably dreaming of how they will spend their holiday money. Have you booked a trip to Ibiza and would you like to learn some Spanish to better understand the menu? Or do you have a completely different reason to learn a different language, for example because you have refugees at home? Duolingo appears to be used more than ever to learn Ukrainian, for example. Rightly so.

Duolingo

Duolingo is an app that allows you to learn other languages. You learn them from English, so that’s something to keep in mind: if you’re not good at English, you can also use the app right away to learn English, but it’s an extra difficulty if you’re not so good at it. are at home in that language. By the way, don’t be confused by the title of the app in the Google Play Store: it’s called Learn English with Duolingo, but in the end you can choose from dozens of languages.

The main reason to recommend Duolingo is that it is free. Now the app has recently become a little more enthusiastic about asking for money, because the idea is that you have as long as possible ‘streak’, where you do a lesson of a few minutes every day. If you miss your streak, you can redeem your accumulated credits to freeze your streak for a while. Even if you make too many mistakes, you can use credits to ensure that you can continue to learn.

To pay or not to pay?

You can buy those credits, but you can also earn them by taking lessons, by watching advertisements and by paying with your real money. It is also possible to subscribe to the app for 90 euros per year. It is sometimes a bit irritating that the app keeps coming up with things like this, but on the other hand, the app is very good for free to use. The app features many different “characters” to help you learn the language and is bursting with fun animations and sounds to make you feel almost fluent.

Duolingo has struck a good balance of keeping you motivated to keep learning while at the same time providing enough opportunities for you to never have to pay for it. You do have to make a small study at the start of what exactly is the difference between the gems and the hearts and how the learning actually works, but especially compared to Rosetta Stone, which is quite pricey, Duolingo is a small gift on your phone. You also get a multitude of different assignments: sometimes you have to type something yourself, sometimes you have to listen, sometimes you have to speak, sometimes you have to link the right words together: it is extremely versatile.

Nice learning

Whether you use Duolingo to learn the basics of the language in your holiday country, to learn a completely new language to welcome refugees in our country or to brush up on a language you already speak: Duolingo offers many possibilities without having to spend money on it. Pay close attention to what you click on and what you agree to, so that you do not have to come up with money after all. If you do your best, and maybe watch an ad every now and then, this fun, playful app will get you a long way.
