Apple employees to test new hardware for FaceID. The temporary case would recognize users with a mouth mask and fogged glasses.

Apple dropped the fingerprint scanner for FaceID a few years ago. Facial recognition is very handy and fast, but the pandemic threw a spanner in the works. Now internal tests show that Apple is testing completely new hardware for FaceID, Jon Prosser of FrontPageTech reports. For now, it is a case that completely fits around an existing iPhone and replaces the cameras with new, dedicated FaceID tech. And that apparently solves a huge problem with facial recognition.

Apple makes new hardware for FaceID

Prosser reports that Apple employees have been given a special case to test FaceID with the help of a new camera setup for very contemporary situations. The iPhone 13 should soon be able to recognize users with a mouth mask and fogged glasses with new FaceID hardware.

Reportedly, employees are required to test FaceID in a variety of situations. Think, for example, of FaceID in a lot of light, with a mouth mask, without glasses. Then in bad light, without a mouth mask but with fogged glasses. In this way it should be tested whether the renewed tech really works better.

Although mouth caps are no longer mandatory in the Netherlands, the piece of fogged glasses is already a blessing. I usually don’t use facial recognition (on Android) for exactly that reason (especially in winter). With a new camera and possibly also new software, FaceID should soon become even better at recognizing apparently unrecognizable iPhone users.
