Know how to act if something happens to your child

As a parent you regularly lose sleep over it: what if something bad happens to your child? An accident is in a small corner and then it is up to you as a parent to act. That won’t go unnoticed by Dutch celebrities either. Presenter Shelly Sterk therefore followed a special one First aid course of the Red Cross and spoke to Dutch celebrities about parenting, concern and what to do in case of accidents at home.

A scrape, a bruise, a big bump on your forehead: children are enterprising and a small accident can easily happen. As a parent you often get away with a plaster and a big kiss, but what if something more serious happens? Do you know what to do if your child chokes, for example? Especially with young children, the first minutes in such a situation are crucial. A first aid course from the Red Cross teaches you which injuries are common and how to treat them.

Singer Sharon Doorson is also regularly awakened by it. Sharon is the mother of Maliya (4) and is especially afraid that her child will choke. “For example, I still find mandarins scary,” she says. “At one point she starts chewing on that for so long and then she says, ‘Mommy, I feel like I’m going to choke.’”

Scary moment for Kimberley Klaver

Such a frightening moment happened to Kimberley Klaver (bonus mother of three children and mother of sons Julius and Dani. She was at a friend’s house when his child put a coin in her mouth. “Suddenly she became completely silent, and you could see that she was it was suffocating,” says Kimberley. “It was so frightening. (…) You stand there and you don’t know what you really have to do to help.” Watch the video here.

Know what to do

Shelly Sterk (Jake’s mother) also sees that an accident happened in no time. That’s why she followed a special course of the Red Cross that focuses entirely on first aid for babies and children. “I did the course once when I was still pregnant with that little one. And that really gave me the necessary security.”

For example, she now knows how to deal with choking. “My son still chokes on food regularly.” The course doesn’t panic her, because she can better recognize when it’s really wrong, and because she can take action: “I now know what to do if he is choking.”
