“Jelly Scroll” is not a hardware or software problem
In the past few days, the first newly introduced Apple products have been delivered to buyers. In addition to the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro, the new iPad mini was also able to convince one or the other. After the first tests, however, some people were disappointed. Customers reported a strange distortion when scrolling content under the term “jelly scrolling”.
For everyone who has not yet noticed this problem: If the user scrolls quickly through content or uses apps that require a high refresh rate, then a certain inconsistency is visible. The left half of the content then updates at a different rate than the right half.
Now Apple has made it clear that the behavior is not a software bug or hardware error, but the problem is due to the fact that an LCD panel is built into the iPad Mini. The manufacturer further argues that with LCD technology one line after the other is updated, so at a frame rate of 60 Hertz the effect occurs.
The whole thing has no effect on the functionality of the device and should hardly be of any consequence in normal use. Nevertheless, some buyers are likely to feel disturbed by the behavior and are consequently dissatisfied with the small tablet.
Ultimately, there is no exchange program or software update for iPad OS that will fix the error. So if you are facing the same problem and are dissatisfied, you can only make use of your right of return (14 days). Nevertheless, it is questionable why the problem has not yet been noticed with the iPad Air 4 or iPad, both devices also have a 60 Hertz LCD panel.
Own opinion:
I do not own the new iPad mini myself, so I cannot report on the problem from practice. In videos, however, the behavior is really only noticeable in exceptional situations and would not be particularly disturbing for me. Nevertheless, everyone should decide for themselves whether such an expensive device should not be exchanged for another tablet.
