It’s hard on the bargain hunters

Netflix currently offers four different subscription levels, which cost between 4.99 euros and a maximum of 17.99 euros per month. But the subscription selection will soon shrink a bit. After a first test run in Canada, Netflix is now going one step further – the noose is slowly tightening.

updated:

Netflix’s basic subscription is history. After a first test run in Canada, the streaming giant now also offers the cheapest version of the ad-free subscription no longer available in the US and UK. In other words: It is most likely only a matter of time before the new subscription structure is also used in Germany.

German customers then have to make a decision: either they switch to the even cheaper subscription for 4.99 euros and then have to live with advertisements, or they switch to that significantly more expensive standard subscriptionwhich costs 12.99 euros per month.

As soon as we know when Netflix will also remove the basic subscription from the program in Germany, we will let you know.

Netflix cancels basic subscription in Canada

Netflix hasn’t made any friends over the past few weeks and months. The action against account sharing has upset many subscribers. But that doesn’t seem to be the end of the road.

How CTV News reported, the streaming giant has now decided to to cancel the popular basic subscription – for now though only in Canada. There, the second cheapest subscription package costs 9.99 Canadian dollars. In Germany, the basic subscription costs 7.99 euros a month.

Both new users and existing customers with an active basic subscription must therefore make a decision: either they go for the even cheaper standard subscription with advertising, but then have to live with advertisements, or they pay significantly more per month and upgrade to the higher standard subscription without advertising. Existing customers will be granted an unspecified grace period for the switchNew customers in Canada, on the other hand, can no longer take out the basic subscription.

The basic subscription allows customers to watch and download films and series on a single device at the same time. The video streams are only made available in HD resolution. Mobile games are also integrated in the subscription.

We have summarized all Netflix subscription levels, their costs and their range of functions for you in this overview article:

Basic subscription for Netflix soon no longer in Germany?

Since Netflix has also used Canada as a test balloon for cracking down on account-sharing, it’s very likely that the basic plan will soon be rolled out in other countries as well. Netflix hasn’t announced a specific date yet, but we assume that the basic subscription will soon no longer be available in Germany either.

But why is Netflix even removing the subscription option for loyal customers? The reason should be clear: internal calculations have probably shown that Netflix can increase its sales in this way. The number of customers who cancel their membership because of this should be manageable – the lion’s share will most likely switch to one of the other subscription levels, with which Netflix collects even more money.
