It’s going to happen: Google is going to make passwordless login possible

It took a while, but Google will soon make passwordless login possible for Chrome and Android.

It was already known that Google is working on the possibility to log in without a password. Now the company has announced that it is really coming. You no longer have to log in to websites or apps with a password. So ideal!

Passwordless Google login

The aim is to make life easier and increase safety. Passwordless login will be available to us sometime in the next year for Android phones and Chrome browser. Then all you need to do is unlock your phone. Google writes this welcome message on their website.

Apple and Microsoft are also working on this. They all work with the FIDO Alliance. This is an organization that is working on other ways of logging in. Now, weak passwords are often the reason criminals gain access to our devices. Yet we will still use passwords for years to come. Google says: “We understand that not all devices and sites are ready. “Passwords will remain a part of our lives as we make this transition, so we will continue to work on ways to better secure existing login systems.”

Key

If you would like to work without a password, you have to use a FIDO key that is on your smartphone. The key is much more secure and is only shown to a login screen when the phone is unlocked.

“To log in to a website on the computer, all you need is a phone nearby,” explains Google. “You get a message to unlock the phone if you want to log in somewhere. When the phone is open, you can log in without an additional password.” Lost your phone? No problem, the key can be restored via a backup in the cloud.
