it should be easier to replace smartphone battery

It should be made easier to replace the battery of a smartphone. The European Parliament is calling for this. From 2024 it should already be possible to replace the battery of your smartphone on (new) models.

Easier to replace your battery

In the past, it was very easy to change or replace the battery with telephones. Just slide the cover off, old battery out, new battery in. This is no longer the case with smartphones today. Smartphones are usually all one piece and the batteries are glued into the entire construction. The European Parliament wants it to be made easier for consumers to replace a battery, so manufacturers should look for alternatives to put batteries in phones. Gluing, for example, could then lead to problems.

The proposed bill has yet to be approved. The plan states that batteries in consumer products must be better able to be recycled. From 2024, it should then be easier for consumers to replace the battery in, for example, a telephone. By 2025, batteries should consist of 70 percent recycled materials.

The European Parliament has plans not only for the batteries in smartphones; these plans are also ready for other products with a battery. For example, (Bluetooth) headphones, tablets and electric bicycles are mentioned.
