Geocaching Premium: worth your money?
Geocaching is one of the best ways to go on an adventure. The idea is that you look outside for small containers that contain a piece of paper. On that piece of paper you write your name, after which you indicate in the app that you have found the cache. You put the container back in the same place and so on.
These caches are literally hidden everywhere. Sometimes just like a box with a roll of film in it, hidden under a piece of wood, but there are also puzzles, mysteries and complete structures to be found. In the app you can sometimes see the exact location of the cache, but most of the time you have to look for it.
If you play via the official app, you will soon find out that many caches are colored gray on the map. That means you can only see details of these caches in the app if you have a Premium subscription. That costs 5.99 euros per month or 29.99 euros per year. That’s not nothing, but is it worth it?
harder is more fun
If you play the free version of Geocaching, you can only find the easy traditional Geocaches in the app. It’s a fun way to introduce yourself to Geocaching. These caches almost always consist of a small container hidden somewhere around the coordinates.
Still, there are a lot of other caches that are a lot more difficult. They are bigger, better hidden or they are in a more difficult to reach place. In addition, you also get access to other types of caches. You will find puzzle caches where you have to put in a lot of thinking to eventually find the cache. With multicaches you go from point to point during a walk to eventually find the cache.
With Premium, you also get some other extras. You get filters to search for caches, you can read a weekly newsletter and you see Adventure Lab caches directly on the map. You can also create a list for offline use.
Worth the effort?
Those extras are nice, but it’s the other caches that really make it worth it. Enthusiasts place these caches and clearly show their passion and love for this hobby through the fun quests, constructions or other creative solutions.
If you are new to Geocaching, play the free version first. There are a lot of traditional geocaches to be found and you can enjoy them for a long time. Have you got the hang of it and want to take the next step? Then a Geocaching Premium subscription is definitely worth it.
Keep an eye on. There are ways to find the geocaches that you can’t see through the app. There are alternative websites or apps for that. Like the Android app c:geo, which presents Geocaching data without limits. That is not entirely according to the rules, but the app is freely available.
Enthusiasts who are deep into this hobby do not always need Premium, but sometimes choose to pay to support creator GroundSpeak, among others, so that their favorite hobby continues to exist.
