Is Apple Working on an iPhone Fold? This is what we know so far
This week Samsung unveiled its new generation of folding phones: the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. Folding smartphones are becoming increasingly popular, but the first foldable iPhone has yet to appear. When will Apple jump on this trend?
Read on after the ad.
Also an iPhone Fold or iPhone Flip?
After Samsung and Huawei launched the first foldable smartphones in 2019, Apple took a closer look. Understandable β we thought. They immediately looked great, but the manufacturers made it a competition to be the first. The first folding telephones therefore had a number of teething problems.
Moreover, the brand new innovation had its price; the phones were expensive. The Galaxy Fold from Samsung had a price tag of 2020 euros. The Huawei Mate X even cost 2229 euros. Too much money for an average consumer.
However, with phones like the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, it becomes a lot more attractive to make the jump to a folding phone. The devices are much less error-prone, sturdier and cheaper. The Galaxy Fold costs 1799 euros, for the Galaxy Flip you pay 1049 euros. So, will Apple follow soon?
Is Apple coming with a foldable iPhone?
There is a good chance that Apple will come out with a foldable iPhone. The tech giant has several patents for iPhones with a folding screen. A 2016 patent describes an iPhone that can be folded in half horizontally, using a flexible OLED screen and metal hinge β similar to the Samsung Flip.
Another patent proves that Apple has tested two displays that are magnetically connected together, which in turn resembles the idea of ββthe Samsung Fold. This means that Apple, like the Korean phone manufacturer, has plans for a smartphone with a clamshell design, and a foldable smartphone that is somewhat larger.
In addition, a very reliable Apple analyst has information about Apple’s plans for folding phones. In May, he reported that Apple is developing a foldable iPhone with a flexible 8-inch OLED display. That is comparable to the screen of an open Samsung Z Fold 3, where the screen measures 7.6 inches diagonally.
When will the foldable iPhone appear?
Unfortunately, the renowned analyst also had less good news: we have to be patient for a while. According to him, the foldable smartphone (the iPhone Fold?) will appear in 2023 at the earliest. Apple would then like to ship between 15 and 20 million foldable iPhones.
More details about Apple’s first foldable smartphone are not yet known. No doubt we will hear more about that this year. Do you want to stay informed of the developments? Then sign up for our newsletter:
