iPhone won’t get 5G modem developed by Apple until 2023

Apple has been working on its own 5G chip for the iPhone for a while, but Apple’s first iPhone 5G modem will probably not be ready until 2023.

Read on after the ad.

Update July 1, 11:30 am:

The delay of Apple’s own 5G modem is not due to a production delay, but due to legal problems, according to FOSS Patents† Apple is said to have a licensing agreement with Qualcomm, which expires in 2025. There is even an option to extend the agreement until 2027. It was thought that Apple would switch to . before then in house modems, but now this seems unlikely.

Apple hoped Qualcomm would ship only 20 percent of 5G modems for the iPhone by the end of 2023, instead of 100 percent. However, the chance of this happening is nil – provided the source is right. In that case, Apple will have to buy all its 5G modems from Qualcomm in the coming years.

Kuo: Apple’s 5G modem isn’t ready yet

In 2019, Apple bought Intel’s modem division for smartphone chips. The manufacturer wanted to develop its own 5G modem for the iPhone, so that Apple’s dependence on Qualcomm comes to an end. We were already expecting the first Apple modem in the iPhone 14 series, but according to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this is still much too early.

Kuo says that “the development of Apple’s own 5G modem for the iPhone 14 has failed.” Shortly thereafter, Qualcomm’s shares rose three percent. Qualcomm is the current main supplier of Apple’s 5G modems, which we find in the iPhone 12 and 13 series.

The analyst also adds that Apple is not giving up yet. An iPhone with Apple’s 5G modem will eventually come under the hood, but not until 2023.

Developing its own 5G chip offers many advantages for Apple. This is how the battery life of the iPhone goes with a in house modem will probably improve drastically and – in a time of chip shortages and other misery – it is always nice to be independent in the field of modems and chips.

This is what the iPhone 14 will get

Although the iPhone does not yet have a 5G modem from Apple (at least until 2023), the iPhone 14 does get a lot of other new features. At first glance, the smartphone has the look of the iPhone 13, but with the Pro model the notch disappears. Instead, Apple hides Face ID and the selfie camera in tiny two holes. These are a lot less noticeable, so the viewing experience is greatly improved!

The selfie camera gets the biggest upgrade in years. According to Kuo, the camera will get autofocus and a higher resolution, making selfies sharper than ever. The aperture goes up from f/2.2 (iPhone 13) to f/1.9. As a result, more light falls on the sensor and photos look a lot better in dark light conditions.
