iPhone survives 1 week involuntary dive in 7 meter deep sea
The rule is actually pretty clear: “Don’t go swimming or bathing with the iPhone,” says the corresponding Apple support page. And: “Do not intentionally immerse the iPhone in water”.

Underwater: iPhone fell into a lake
The case now reported from Brazil cannot be said to be “intentional”. However, an iPhone ended up in the water – in Lake Paranoá in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia.

This is where Breno Rafael was kayaking when he saw a girl fighting drowning nearby. Without thinking further, Rafael jumped out of the kayak and saved the girl.
However, his iPhone fell out of his vest, as the young man told the Brazilian television station TV Globo reported. His iPhone had fallen into the water – irretrievably for Rafael given the average water depth of twelve meters.
But that’s not the end of the story. Because during a dive, diving instructor Edinho Rocha found the iPhone at a depth of around seven meters. Rocha recovered the device, which to his surprise was still working.
As it turned out later, the smartphone in which it is according to Futurezone is an iPhone 11, have been in the lake for about a week at this point.
To illustrate how unlikely this is, let’s revisit Apple’s support page. Accordingly, the iPhone 11 is certified according to IEC standard 60529 under IP68.
That means it’s waterproof “up to 30 minutes and to a depth of up to two meters”. The iPhone 11 Pro would therefore survive half an hour at a depth of four meters without damage. For iPhone 12 to iPhone 14, a depth of six meters is given.
The iPhone could actually survive the water depth of seven meters. But there is a huge difference between half an hour and seven days.
As befits a TV-ready story, Rocha tracked down the phone’s owner through a social media appeal.
The corresponding video was viewed 17,000 times and also seen by Rafael. He was able to prove that the phone belonged to him because he was able to unlock the locked device.
There was a similarly unbelievable incident in 2021 with a Samsung Galaxy S21 – which can also remain under water for half an hour without being damaged.
A Youtuber who put the device and its behavior under water to the test wanted to ask, submerged the Samsung phone in an aquarium. After twelve days it was still doing its job.
