The EU law on usb-c: Apple’s great torment?

In June of this year, we already reported that iPhones should have a USB-C connection from 2024. Now the European Union has reached an agreement on a common charging port for all smartphones. In the previous article it was said that the law still had to pass the European Parliament.

That has now happened! The law that will ban Apple’s famous Lightning port in 2024 has now passed. In this article you can read everything about the new connection and whether Apple will actually do this.

Why is usb-c the standard connection in the EU?

The European Parliament has been working on the new EU law for some time that will oblige Apple (and other electronics companies) to use USB-C. New devices must be connected with USB-C cabling from November 2024. We’re glad this took so long. If democracy worked faster, we would now be stuck with micro USB.

The EU has been working for years to label USB-C as a ‘standard connection’ for mobile devices. However, in the context of climate change and emissions, this EU law has gained momentum. The new USB-C law ensures that all mobile devices can be charged with the same charger. In this way, Europe hopes to reduce electronic waste.
