iPhone 15 has its own 5G modem from Apple

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 are the first iPhones with 5G – and the modem for this is provided by Qualcomm. Apple now wants to make that 5G modem itself and we will see the first in the iPhone 15 from 2023, reports Digitimes.

iPhone 15 with 5G modem from Apple

According to the Taiwanese website – which is usually well informed about Apple’s plans – the iPhone 14 from 2022 will be the last Apple phone for which Qualcomm provides the 5G modems. After that, the iPhones will be equipped with modems designed by Apple itself.

Apple wouldn’t plan to integrate the modem directly onto the System on Chip (SoC), as Android manufacturers plan to do. The 5G modem that Apple is developing would be separate from the processor that Apple probably calls the A17 Bionic chip.

The modems would be manufactured by Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC, writes DigiTimes. The company would already be preparing for Apple’s own 5G modem. TSMC is no stranger: the company has been making the A-processors of the iPhone for years.

more independent

Making its own chip is part of Apple’s efforts to become more independent from other manufacturers. The tech giant has been using proprietary processors for the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV for years. Recently, the Macs are also equipped with a chip of our own making: the M1 processor.

It is not the first time that there are rumors that the iPhone 15 has a 5G modem from Apple. In May, the very reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo already mentioned this. According to the analyst, such an Apple modem has many advantages. Because the modem is tailor-made for the iPhone, it is much faster and more energy-efficient than current Qualcomm chips.
