iPadOS 16.1: Apple makes the release date official

The wait is finally over. In just a few days, iPad users will also be able to install the new system – iPadOS 16.1 now has an official release date from Apple.

Update from October 18, 2022: In the course of the introduction of the iPad Pro with M2 chip and the new 10th generation iPad, Apple is now also announcing the release date of iPadOS 16.1. The new system should therefore be available for download on Monday, October 24th.

Interesting: Apple officially only speaks of iPadOS 16 in the announcement, but not of version 16.1. We probably only suspect a contortion of marketing, since the development of iPadOS 16 has long been abandoned in favor of iPadOS 16.1 (source: Apple).

In the last few days, the sparrows in the rumor mill have been whistling from their roofs: iPadOS 16 will be delayed and iPad users will therefore have to wait longer for their update. However, there was no official confirmation – until now. In the course of the latest developer versions of iOS 16, Apple is not releasing the 7th beta of iPadOS 16, but instead the first pre-release of iPadOS 16.1 for the developers.

iPadOS 16.1 instead of iPadOS 16: Apple is changing plans for the iPad

This turns the fear into reality and the iPad update will not be released this year at the same time as iOS 16 for the iPhone. Opposite to TechChrunch Apple then clarifies again (translated): “This is a particularly important year for iPadOS. As a proprietary platform with features built specifically for iPad, we have the flexibility to ship iPadOS on our own schedule. This fall, iPadOS will ship after iOS as version 16.1 in a free software update.”

Along with iPadOS 16.1, Apple is taking the opportunity to launch a new feature for the stage manager to introduce There should be an option to make the Stage Manager sidebar appear again with a gesture while the function is in full-screen mode. Other than that, the update includes the usual bug fixes.

Not all of these updates will appear at the same time in 2022 – iPadOS and macOS need more time:

Probably not presented until October

Apple did not give a specific date for the presentation of iPadOS 16.1, but the industry is assuming a date in October. Most likely shortly after another Apple event to unveil new iPads and Macs. Among other things, the 10th generation iPad and new models of the iPad Pro are expected. Apple’s approach this time is quite unusual. Delayed rollout of future macOS updates is common, but iOS and iPadOS have mostly been released at the same time so far. Not so this year, however, iOS 16 will be released on time in September, the counterpart for the iPad will be delayed.
