iPad 2022 gets a new design, but keeps the home button

According to a rumor, the design of the ‘normal’ iPad 2022 will be overhauled, but a little less rigorous than expected. The iconic home button under the screen would be retained.

‘Design iPad 2022 less exciting than expected’

Later this year, Apple will release the tenth version of the regular iPad. The website MySmartPrice managed to get hold of rough renders. If those are correct, the design of the affordable tablet will finally get an update. The bezels above and below the screen are thinner, but they are not equal to the sides, as on the iPad Air and iPad Pro. This leaves room for the home button. Actually, we thought Apple would say goodbye to that this year.

However, according to the renders, the edges of the device are completely flat. That probably means that the iPad 2022 will receive support for the Apple Pencil 2. You can easily charge it magnetically by clicking it on the side. You can only use the iPad 2021 with the first Apple Pencil, which you charge by plugging it into the Lightning port. That’s a lot more inconvenient.

On the back of the tablet, we see that Apple is adding a camera island to the design of the iPad 2022. Until now, the camera on the cheapest iPads has always been hidden in the housing. There is still only one lens to be seen, but it may be better than the one on the current entry-level iPad. Furthermore, there seems to be a flash or microphone on the bulge.

We are very happy with the speakers that can be seen on both the top and the bottom. That means you can finally enjoy real stereo sound when you watch a series on Netflix, for example. Until now, Apple’s cheapest tablets only had speakers on the bottom.

MySmartPrice also confirms many of the specifications that we read earlier. The iPad 2022 runs on a faster A14 chip and will have a larger screen of 10.5 or 10.9 inches. The current model has an A13 processor and a 10.2-inch display. With the Cellular model you will soon also be able to use 5G. It is not yet clear whether Apple will stick to the Lightning port or switch to USB-C, as on the more expensive iPads in the range.

Lots of iPads this fall

Apple is expected to release the iPad 2022 at a special event this fall. We therefore expect to see the iPad Pro 2022. It runs on a faster M2 processor and may have a glass back. This would allow you to charge the tablet wirelessly. Apple may also provide the tablets with a somewhat larger battery.
