Release of iOS 16.1 is near

After the announcement of the new iPad models, Apple made another announcement on Tuesday. The Cupertino company confirmed that iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 will be released next week. That will probably be on Monday 24 October. The update will be ready from around 7 p.m.

Apple has also released the Release Candidate (RC) of iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 for developers and public testers. This is the last test version before a release.

What’s New in iOS 16.1?

With iOS 16.1, the iPhone gets several new functions. Here are the main ones:

  • Live activities. With Live Activities, you can see the progress of ongoing activities right from the iPhone lock screen. For example, you can see the standings of a football match without having to unlock your iPhone, or a parcel service shows the estimated time of arrival.
  • Shared iCloud Photo Library. A new way to share photos is coming. You can create a shared new album in iCloud that lets you share photos with up to five others. Rules can be set here, so that you automatically share certain photos. For example, based on a start date or people who can be seen in the photos.
  • Battery percentage. iOS 16.1 brings battery percentage to more iPhones, including the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. The icon also changes. Now visually it always stays full, but with iOS 16.1 the icon moves with the percentage.
  • iOS 16.1 supports Matter, allowing you to use more smart home devices with HomeKit.
