Investigations against Honda’s automatic braking system

With the increasing digitization of our vehicles, it often happens that the IT systems in cars, vans or scooters do not work the way we intend them to. In recent years, transport authorities have therefore sporadically examined manufacturers who have had an accumulation of problems. In February, for example, Tesla was scrutinized by investigative authorities in the United States and Germany.

Less than two weeks later, things are moving on with Honda, the United States Traffic Safety Authority is currently investigating whether unintentional braking maneuvers occur on various models. Because a total of 278 owners reported that the manufacturer’s vehicles braked without any visible reason.

Around 1.7 million vehicles are affected by the measure, including models from 2017, 2018 and 2019. So far, nothing dangerous has happened to the models. Of the 278 reports mentioned at the beginning, only six had minor accidents with minor accidents injuries. Larger collisions or even serious injuries could not be determined so far.

In addition to the errors in the software of various manufacturers, the current case primarily shows one thing: Even if we already have a number of assistance systems available to us in our cars on a daily basis, the driver always remains responsible. After all, people should still be able to intervene if technology fails one day.
